Potter confirms Azpilicueta in hospital and gives his verdict on a disappointing performance
Cesar Azpilicueta is given OXYGEN in worrying scenes at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea defender is taken off on stretcher.
Cesar Azpilicueta was taken to hospital after he suffered a sickening head injury during Chelsea’s defeat by Southampton.
The 33-year-old is believed to have been unconscious after Southampton substitute Sekou Mara attempted to volley the ball but only booted Azpilicueta in the face.
It was a horrible collision and the thud could be heard around Stamford Bridge.
The defender was eventually taken off on a stretcher, wearing a neckbrace, but Chelsea manager Graham Potter revealed the 33-year-old was awake and speaking to loved ones while undergoing treatment. Video Rating: / 5

Cesar Azpilicueta suffered a horror blow to the face when Sekou Mara attempted an overhead kick in a major injury concern.
The Chelsea defender was struck by the stray boot in his own penalty area during today’s Premier League match with Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
He immediately fell to the ground and was stricken as team-mates and opposition players desperately called medical staff on to rush on and assist.
Replays on the Premier League live feed were not shown as the stretcher was carried on and treatment continued.
Club doctors from both teams initially tended to the club captain but St John’s Ambulance paramedics took over in disturbing scenes in West London.
Players on both sides looked visibly shocked after the freak accidental incident.
The match was stopped for ten minutes before he was placed on the stretcher with a neck brace and oxygen mask.
He was given a rapturous applause on his way towards the ambulance emergency exit of the stadium.
And the Spanish veteran was definitely conscious as he gave a wave to the fans.
